Keosauqua is undertaking two projects to improve their sanitary sewer system, with French-Reneker-Associates providing planning, design, and construction-related engineering services.

As is the case with many communities, excess water enters Keosauqua’s sewer system during wet weather conditions.  The excess water carried to the lagoon results in violations of Keosauqua’s influent flow rate and causes them to release wastewater prior to the required six months of storage.  The excess water also overloads the sewers causing them to bypass wastewater to the ground surface.  Keosauqua is attacking the problem on both fronts.  They have undertaken a sewer lining project and they are expanding their lagoon.  The sewer lining project includes lining 4,100 feet of 8-inch sewer and lining 21 manholes for a bid price of $154,500.  The sewer lining material is a pliable fiberglass material impregnated with special resin, delivered to the site in refrigerated trucks.  The liner material is inserted and unrolled into the sewers from one manhole to the next.  Steam is then forced into the sewer which expands the liner against the old clay sewer and chemically sets the liner, forming a new plastic pipe inside the old pipe.  The lagoon expansion project includes adding a fourth lagoon cell to their existing 3-cell controlled discharge lagoon.  The new lagoon cell will increase their total storage capacity by 45%.  The construction cost for the lagoon cell and the associated piping is approximately $298,000.

Lagoon Addition

Construction of both projects is scheduled to be completed in 2003.
