Sanitary Sewer Being Installed

Work recently began on a sanitary sewer rehabilitation and replacement program within the city of Birmingham.  This particular project includes the replacement of 1,730 linear feet of 8-inch diameter sanitary sewer and lining 2,170 linear feet of 8-inch diameter sanitary sewer.

The city of Birmingham has been plagued with excessive inflow and infiltration of groundwater into their aging sanitary sewer system.   This inflow and infiltration has caused sewer overloading and backups that have damaged private property and has violated the influent flows to their wastewater treatment facility

Sanitary Sewer Being Installed

The city of Birmingham selected French-Reneker-Associates to prepare a preliminary engineering report to recommend solutions to their problems.  French-Reneker recommended a two-prong approach that includes replacement of deteriorated sewers and lining those identified as salvageable.

French-Reneker-Associates also assisted the city in making an application for Community Development Block Grant funds to assist with the financing of the $272,000 construction project.  DeLong-Keith Construction of Washington, Iowa, is the prime contractor on the project.  Municipal Pipe Tool of Hudson, Iowa, is the subcontractor who will be providing the sewer lining installations.  Work is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2003.
