West Street Paving

The residents along West Street from Walnut Street to Jackson Street in Sigourney, have a new portland concrete pavement in front of their homes as a result of the recent sewer replacement work.

The project involved the replacement of two lift stations; approximately 1,500 L.F. of 8” gravity sewer; 3,400 L.F. of 2 ½” and 4” forcemains; and 1,300 S.Y. of PCC pavement removal and replacement.

The contractor was Engineering Consultants, Inc., of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; M&M Enterprises of Sigourney was the subcontractor for the pavement.  Construction on the project began in June of 2002 and was completed in September of 2002.

The Keswick Road lift station was a wet well-dry well type with a trash basket.  French-Reneker-Associates was able to eliminate the trash basket by using three grinder pumps, each utilizing a separate 4” forcemain.  This concept met the flow requirements and results in reduced labor and maintenance cost to the city.

The replacement of the gravity sewer in West Street included the removal and replacement of the existing paved street.  Fly ash was used to stabilize the subgrade, which allowed the concrete trucks to traverse the grade without rutting.
